Core Concept: Newborns have sterile intestines and lack the bacterial flora necessary to synthesize Vitamin K, placing them at high risk for Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB), also known as hemorrhagic disease of the newborn.

Clinical Presentation:

• Bleeding from the umbilical stump, gastrointestinal tract, circumcision site, or intracranial hemorrhage.
• Bruising and oozing from puncture sites.

Diagnosis:

• First-line plan: Clinical assessment for bleeding and prolonged prothrombin time (PT).
• Gold standard: Coagulation profile showing prolonged PT and normal platelet count, corrected by Vitamin K administration.

Management:

• Acute: Prophylactic intramuscular (IM) injection of 0.5 to 1 mg of phytonadione (Vitamin K1) within the first hour of birth.
• Long-term/Definitive: Monitoring for signs of bleeding, ensuring adequate breast milk or formula intake, and routine pediatric follow-up.
