الشرح

Core Concept: Cerebral Palsy (CP) is a group of non-progressive motor impairment syndromes caused by brain injury early in development. While it primarily affects motor function, comorbidities are common. Approximately 30% to 50% of individuals with CP have some degree of intellectual disability (cognitive impairment), though many have normal or above-average intelligence.

Clinical Presentation: • Motor delays, spasticity, dyskinesia, ataxia, abnormal posture and gait. • Associated conditions: seizures, vision/hearing impairments, speech difficulties. • Complications: Contractures, scoliosis, malnutrition.

Diagnosis: 1) First-line: Clinical observation of motor milestones, neurological exam, and MRI of the brain. 2) Gold standard: Standardized developmental and cognitive testing (e.g., Bayley Scales, IQ tests) to accurately assess intellectual functioning.

Management: Acute: Multidisciplinary early intervention (physical, occupational, and speech therapy). Definitive: Lifelong supportive care, orthopedic surgeries for contractures, antispasmodics (baclofen), and individualized education programs (IEPs).
