Clinical Presentation:

  • Preterm female: Prominent labia minora with smaller, widely separated labia majora.
  • Other preterm signs: Poor ear cartilage recoil, thin translucent skin, abundant lanugo, few or no sole creases.

Diagnosis:

  • First-line/Gold Standard: New Ballard Score (neuromuscular and physical maturity assessment) performed within 12-36 hours of birth.

Management:

  • Acute: Admit to NICU for thermoregulation, respiratory support, and specialized nutrition.
  • Long-term: Monitor for prematurity-related complications (e.g., RDS, NEC, retinopathy of prematurity) and provide developmental care.
